From the ABC website:  French Oaked and full proof bourbon whisky. This limited-edition bourbon is Maker’s 46 turned up to Cask Strength. Not your typical barrel-proof bourbon, Maker’s 46 Cask Strength boasts exceptional smoothness thanks to their use of soft red winter wheat in the mash bill. The original Maker’s Mark 46 is finished with 10 seared virgin French oak staves and purposefully bottled at 94 proof to bring out the perfect combination of vanilla and baking spice that was ideal for Bill Jr.’s taste vision. An intensified 46 experience, Maker’s 46 Cask Strength Bourbon Whisky boasts new depths of heavy dark fruit, tobacco and caramel notes you won’t find at lower proof.

The Maker’s Mark Distillery really is a leader in the Bourbon industry.  Their marketing is on par with Absolut Vodka.  Everyone recognizes their bottles dipped in red wax.  It’s a common discussion among bourbon drinkers that when they wanted to graduate from the bottom-shelf rot gut that they were buying when they were young, they probably went for the Maker’s Mark.

As we all know, to be called ‘bourbon’, the mashbill (recipe) must contain at least 51% corn.  The rest of the mashbill is up to the master distiller.  Maker’s Mark is a wheated bourbon.  The majority of the rest of the mashbill is wheat.  Those are often considered to be easier on the taste buds with less of a bite than the high-rye bourbons.  Number 46 is notable for being “aged longer with special seared French oak staves”.  When the primary aging is done, they transfer the whiskey to a holding tank.  Then they open the barrel and insert a French oak stave.  They put the barrel back together and pour  the whiskey back in.  It sits there for another few months.  That’s all it takes for the French oak to add its flavor.  Maker’s Mark No. 46 is popular among connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike.  And for less than sixty-five bucks, you can’t go wrong.  Biba!
