From the ABC website:  “Fifteen-year-old Glenfiddich from three types of casks (traditional American bourbon, Portuguese sherry and new oak) is married in a large Solera vat, made of Oregon pine. The vat is always kept at least half full, ensuring a consistent quality of whisky is maintained whenever it is topped up. Then this beautifully balanced single malt is left to settle in a small Solera tun before bottling. The result? A full and fruity nose, with delicate honey and vanilla notes. The taste is elegantly smooth, with a deep flavor that reveals fruit, gentle spice and a touch of oak. The finish is long and satisfying.”

Running a website is hard.  Trust me.  I get it.  But, the Glenfiddich website is just terrible.  It’s an example of what not to do.  Really bad.   I would love to tell you what they have to say about their excellent whisky, but all I see is a lot of flashing video of race cars.  It’s like they’re a racing company with a whisky side hustle.  I won’t even bother to post their website.  You won’t learn anything and it’s just going to set off anyone with epilepsy.  I don’t want to be responsible for that.

Anyway.  It appears as if they’ve accidentally bottled some exceptional Scotch.

Owned by William Grant and Sons, Wikipedia tell us, in 1963 “they also decided to begin marketing single malt as a premium brand in its own right, effectively creating the modern single malt whisky category with the 1963 introduction of Glenfiddich single malt to the United States and other foreign markets

.”  By that time they’d been putting Glenfiddich in their iconic triangular bottles for several years.

We’ve covered the solara whisky aging technique before and whiskeybarrel.org does a pretty good job of explaining it better than I can.  Simply put, imagine a pyramid of barrels.  When some whisky is drained from the bottom barrel, it is replaced by the whisky in the barrels above it.  It’s an unusual technique and not common in the whisk(e)y industry.  Blade and Bow Bourbon uses solara aging.  I can vouch for the Glenfiddich Solera Reserve Single Malt Scotch.  Highly recommend it.
